While I often use the phrase "global education" and felt I had a firm understanding of what it is, during my fellowship in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program I discovered that I had so much more to learn. This website is a resource guide designed to help educators, parents, students, and community members understand exactly what global education is and how to best prepare students as global citizens for life in the 21st Century.
This page provides an overview and definition of global education from materials that I have created, including the slideshow below. If you are interested in more in-depth professional global education sources, including those I have consulted, click on the "Resources" link. The "Teach" tab provides units and other classroom ideas for educators. To learn about my field placement in Morocco as part of the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program and the student and staff tours I have led, click on "Travel". To find out more about the School of Global Education in Livonia Public Schools where I teach, follow this link.

About the Author:
Amie (Van Horn) Gabel joined the School of Global Education at Livonia Stevenson High School sixteen years ago. She works in close collaboration with colleagues in providing a world perspective to the students enrolled in Stevenson’s “school within a school” global program. Currently she splits her time evenly teaching freshmen and sophomore English. Amie is also the lead chaperone for the international travel component of the Global Ed. curriculum and is the sponsor for Stevenson’s literary arts magazine.
"Ms. Van Horn" as she is known to her students, earned her BA in History from Eastern Michigan University in 1997, participated in the Eastern Michigan Writing Project in 2002, completed a Master in Liberal Studies degree from the University of Michigan in 2008, and in 2013 attended French language schools in Paris and Nice. Her recent fellowship in the U.S. State Department's Teachers for Global Classrooms Program has greatly enhanced her effectiveness in her ultimate educational goal: “to think globally, act locally.”
In her spare time Amie enjoys travel, yoga, writing, reading, and hiking. As much as she loves learning about the world and being an active global citizen, she also loves all things Michigan and knows "there is no place like home".
